House Tours Beautiful Affordable Net Zero Energy Home
As the overall winner of the 2013 Connecticut Zero Energy Challenge, this house demonstrates how affordable, efficient and comfortable a net zero home can be. At 2,600 square feet, this home is ideal for a small family or retired couple. The features of a high-performance building envelope are on clear display here, including:
• 12-inch thick insulated walls,
• triple-glazed windows,
• good (R70) ceiling insulation,
• an insulated concrete form (ICF) foundation and even
• insulation (R20) below the basement slab.
With such a tight building envelope, net zero energy balance could be achieved through use of heat pumps for heating and cooling, a heat recovery ventilator (HRV), a heat pump hot water heater and a modest solar array on the roof.
