Housing & Energy Affordability Resilience For Environmental Justice Communities
In vulnerable communities, where less investment has been made in building improvements, and where homes are draftier, less efficient and waste more energy, heating, electricity and water have become unaffordable. The legislature has an historic opportunity to invest state and federal dollars to expand energy efficiency, weatherization, solar and electrification in our most vulnerable Environmental Justice communities. The results will include lower energy costs, lower energy pollution, increased resilience in economically distressed communities and will directly respond to addressing the rising energy prices. This approach also results in improved indoor health and increased jobs.
Investments in reducing energy waste and increasing clean energy access in Connecticut’s Environmental Justice Communities result in reduced energy bills. Proven Energy Efficiency upgrades like air sealing and insulation upgrades result in improved housing stock. This is an area of need in Connecticut’s one to four unit housing. If funding is braided this approach will also remove common health hazards including mold and asbestos, knob and tube wiring, which will support increased opportunities for EE, solar, and battery storage upgrades. EE retrofitting housing will also increase resilience to storms, resilience to rising energy prices, and will support workforce training and placement of vulnerable populations as workers in the clean energy field. This Energy Equity plan has an intentional focus on diversity, equity and inclusion.

Where to Begin? Navigating Connecticut Grant Opportunities
March 27, 2023, 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Central Connecticut, Location TBD
Simply put, there are a lot of funding opportunities available right now. With historic federal investments in environmental and climate infrastructure, communities and organizations across Connecticut must quickly determine which programs are worth the time and resources needed to put together an application. This workshop aims to position attendees to take advantage of grant funding opportunities in the near-term, helping them implement priority projects. Participants will learn about the “do’s and don'ts” of a successful proposal, how to successfully engage partners and community members, and how to communicate the benefits of their project to funders. You will hear from staff from state and federal funding programs, and have the opportunity to brainstorm project ideas with program staff one-on-one. Lastly, you will have the option to attend in-person site visit(s) to see successfully funded projects first-hand. Contact us at courtney@throwe-environmental.com or kyle@throwe-environmental.com
